Composition 1
Composition is the framework that guides the viewer's eyes by intentionally placing visual elements to tell the story. What can make one piece look better than the other, even if they share the same subjects, is the image’s composition. A good composition can set apart a visually compelling piece from a chaotic and confusing image.
1. Composition can sound vague, but understanding how it works will make it second nature.
Composition is the arrangement of elements within an artwork. It guides a viewer’s eye across a piece and determines what feels balanced, engaging, or meaningful. Strong composition can make even simple drawings feel intentional and visually compelling.
2. Common composition techniques
2a. Rule of Thirds
The rule of thirds is one of the most fundamental composition techniques. Divide your canvas into a 3x3 grid using two horizontal and two vertical lines. Instead of placing the subject directly in the center, position key elements along these lines or at their intersections. Simply put, off-center your subject with intention to create a more natural and dynamic composition.
This creates a more natural and dynamic composition. Centering everything can feel static, while off-center placement adds visual interest and movement. This can be used when your subject is moving, giving the subject more space to move into. It can also be used when you want the background to be the focus. If you want a symmetrical composition, then the rule of thirds would disrupt the balance.
2b. Golden Ratio/Spiral
The golden ratio is a mathematical ratio that appears naturally in patterns like shells and plants. In art, it is often visualized as a spiral that guides the viewer's attention throughout the composition.
To do this, artists place key elements among their curves, leading the viewer naturally toward the focal point, which is located at the center of the spiral. This creates a sense of harmony and flow that feels natural rather than forced.
2c. Leading Lines
Leading lines are visual guidelines that help you map the viewer's attention through an image. People’s eyes naturally follow lines in an image, whether these lines are found in nature, like rivers, treelines, waves, or any kind of pattern that would get the viewer to look where you want them to look— and draw attention away from areas you’d prefer they avoid.
2d. Perspective, Viewpoint and Proportion
Perspective refers to the illusion of depth on a flat surface. It transforms a drawing from something flat into something that looks 3D. Perspective can control visual hierarchy by scaling objects depending on their distance from the viewer, drawing attention to your main subject. 3. Exercises for You to Practice
3a. Drawing Boxes and Other 3D Shapes
It sounds really boring, but consistently practicing drawing basic 3D shapes from different perspectives and angles will improve your muscle memory. This exercise will teach you how to break complex objects down into familiar and basic shapes, which will make complex perspective drawing easier.
3b. Thumbnailing
Thumbnailing is a common practice in the early stages of creating an art piece to brainstorm compositional ideas. Draw 3-5 small boxes (about 2x3 inches) in your sketchbook, and set a 3-5 minute time limit for each box. The goal is to force yourself to focus on large abstract shapes and overarching design. Do not draw in details or textures; this exercise is to train your eyes to arrange shapes, values, and lines so they create an interesting and compelling visual story. You can also try doing the same scene in different lighting value maps or different color schemes.
Congrats! Now you know the bare basics of composition. Composition is still a very broad and complex subject that is fundamental to creating a compelling story in art. Keep advancing your compositional intuition by practicing and continuing to learn with Composition 2!
